WHAT IS THE ENNEAGRAM?

Enneagram

Some believe that the Enneagram, an ancient nine point symbol, originated in the Middle East. It has been suggested that this symbol was created as a way of mapping the mathematical and energetic aspects of the physical world; including astrological, natural and even psychological phenomenon. From a Middle Eastern perspective, the structure of the symbol represents the fundamental operations of the universe which are essentially the same operations that exist in individuals, plants, animals and microbes (microcosm).

THE ENNEAGRAM PERSONALITY MODEL

The Enneagram Personality Model consists of nine basic essential human topologies. By topologies we mean basic "body types". Body type refers to the physical, emotional and intellectual characteristics of the personality; including all the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the type. It is vital to understand the following: the Enneagram does not dictate who we are (which is unique) but rather examines the basic "operating system" we are born into (which is not unique).

STUDY OF THE ENNEAGRAM

The Enneagram Personality Model provides us with an extraordinary map of our behaviors and the behaviors of others. As we study the different types, we begin to understand how each one perceives and responds to its environment. Knowing our strengths, weaknesses, motivations, fears (and those of others), allows us to become more objective in our interactions with the world around us.

When we begin to see others and ourselves more clearly we can attain enhanced levels of communication and improved interpersonal relationships. For business, the Enneagram can be a valuable tool for establishing hiring criteria, skill recognition and team building. For self awareness, the Enneagram points out what we are not: We are not our body, emotions, or intellect. As we begin to understand the "automatic nature" of personality, we begin to have a deeper connection to our true self which cannot be placed on any diagram.

THE USES OF THE ENNEAGRAM

In the last thirteen years the Enneagram has gained increased recognition and popularity. The study of the Enneagram is part of the required curriculum for psychology and business students at universities such as Stanford, Harvard, and UC Berkeley. The Jesuit and Franciscan Brotherhoods study the Enneagram extensively, and The C.I.A. uses this tool to predict the behavior of world leaders. Dozens of Fortune 500 companies use the Enneagram for hiring and employee relations.
